A More Welcoming Nutcracker: Spokane’s Sensory-Friendly Performance Returns

For some families, a traditional night at the theater can be difficult.

Bright lights, unexpected sounds, sitting still for long periods and the pressure to remain quiet can make an experience that’s supposed to be fun feel overwhelming.

That’s why one particular performance of The Nutcracker at The Fox caught my attention this year.

On Wednesday, December 2, 2026, at 6 p.m., The Fox will host a special Sensory-Friendly performance of The Nutcracker designed to make this Spokane holiday tradition more accessible and comfortable for neurodivergent guests and others with sensory needs.

And I think that’s something worth knowing about.

What Makes This Nutcracker Performance Different?

This isn’t a shortened preview or a completely different show.

Guests will experience a full-length performance of The Nutcracker, featuring State Street Ballet, local dancers and the Spokane Symphony.

The difference is in the environment.

For the sensory-friendly performance, adjustments are made to help guests who may find a traditional theater setting challenging.

According to The Fox, the experience includes adjusted lighting, general admission seating with greater flexibility to move during the performance, and sensory support tools available in the lobby.

That flexibility can make a big difference.

Families can enjoy the beauty and excitement of The Nutcracker without some of the expectations that normally come with attending a theater performance.

One of the things I love about living in Spokane is the traditions that become part of our families’ stories.

Going downtown during the holidays. Seeing the lights. Walking into The Fox. Hearing the Spokane Symphony. Watching The Nutcracker.
