Football Is Back: Why Eastern Washington’s Season Starts with a Must-Win Mindset
Football season is almost here, and excitement is building in Cheney.
This year carries a different feel for Eastern Washington University. Instead of easing into the schedule with a nonconference game, the Eagles will open the 2026 season with a matchup that immediately impacts the Big Sky Conference standings.
On Saturday, August 29, Eastern Washington travels to Flagstaff, Arizona, to face Northern Arizona in its conference opener. With the Big Sky Conference moving to a nine-game league schedule, every conference game carries added importance—and the race begins on opening day.
A Different Kind of Preparation
Opening the season against a conference opponent has changed the team’s approach during fall camp.
Head coach Aaron Best says the focus has been on preparing for a game that counts from the very first kickoff.
“What I am excited about is prepping in camp for a league game out of the gate. You could be undefeated in nonconference, but it’s what you do in conference that matters.”
Instead of using an early game to work out the kinks, the Eagles know their first opportunity to earn a conference win comes immediately.
A Veteran Team Looking to Take the Next Step
Eastern Washington enters the season after a 5–7 finish in 2025, but there’s optimism surrounding a roster filled with experienced returning players and veteran leadership.
The Eagles were selected eighth in the Big Sky preseason poll, providing plenty of motivation as they prepare for the new season.
Players to Watch
Nate Bell, Quarterback
Quarterback Nate Bell returns as one of the team’s leaders after being named one of Eastern Washington’s six team captains.
Bell earned All-Big Sky Honorable Mention honors after throwing for 1,003 yards while adding 663 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. His ability to create plays both through the air and on the ground makes him one of the conference’s most dynamic returning players.
New Offensive Playmakers
Several familiar faces are expected to take on expanded roles this season.
Keep an eye on:
- Wesley Garrett, the Eagles’ leading returning receiver.
- Cole Pruett, who delivered a breakout performance with 10 catches for 133 yards at Montana last season.
- Jaxon Branch, a talented wide receiver who impressed coaches during spring practices.
- Running backs Malik Dotson, Kevin Allen III, and Wilson Medina, who will compete for opportunities in the backfield.
Rebuilding the Defense
The defense also returns a strong veteran core while replacing several key contributors from last season.
Players including Myles Mayovsky, Samarai Anderson, Isaiah Perez, Ben Voigtlaender, and Jaden Radke are expected to play important roles as the Eagles prepare for the season.

Eastern Washington opens the 2026 season on Saturday, August 29, against Northern Arizona before returning to Roos Field for its home opener against Northern Iowa on September 5.
