Why You’ll Love This Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken

This is the kind of recipe that’s perfect for days when you know the evening is going to be busy.

Add everything to the slow cooker earlier in the day, let it cook and come back to tender chicken and onions in a rich, savory sauce. Add the provolone during the last few minutes and dinner is ready.

It’s simple enough for a regular weeknight but comforting enough for a cozy Sunday dinner.

Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 4–6 hours
Serves: 4–6

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can condensed French onion soup
  • ½ cup beef broth

  3. Pour the condensed French onion soup, beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the chicken.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the chicken is tender and has reached an internal temperature of 165°F.
  5. During the last 10–15 minutes of cooking, place the provolone cheese over the chicken.
  6. Cover the slow cooker again and allow the cheese to melt.
  7. Serve the chicken with plenty of the onions and savory sauce spooned over the top.

What to Serve With French Onion Chicken

You definitely don’t want that delicious French onion sauce to go to waste, so this dinner is especially good served over something that can soak it all up.

Mashed potatoes are my first choice. The creamy potatoes with the savory onion gravy and melted provolone make this meal especially comforting.

You can also serve it with:

  • Buttered egg noodles
  • White or brown rice
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Steamed green beans
  • Roasted broccoli
  • A simple green salad
  • Crusty bread

Easy Tips for the Best French Onion Chicken

Slice your onion fairly thin so it becomes soft and tender while the chicken cooks. A sweet onion works especially well because its natural sweetness balances the savory beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.

Chicken breasts can vary quite a bit in thickness, so check them toward the earlier end of the cooking window if your slow cooker tends to cook quickly. The chicken is ready when the thickest portion reaches 165°F.

And don’t skip the provolone! That melted layer of cheese is what really gives the dish its French onion-inspired finish.
