The area was named Waikiki in 1904 by Spokane pioneer Jay P. Graves, who borrowed the Native Hawaiian phrase meaning “spouting fresh water” because of the area’s incredible hydrology. Natural aquifer springs bubble directly into the riverbed year-round, keeping the water temperature mild and creating a rich sanctuary for deer, hawks, and great blue herons.

Thanks to the Inland Northwest Land Conservancy, nearly 200 acres of this shoreline are permanently protected for the community to enjoy.
